Spring Freshet: Flooding Concerns Rise for Ontario Rivers
Rapid snowmelt combined with heavy spring rains has prompted conservation authorities to issue high water and flood alerts.
High water levels are threatening low-lying communities.
With temperatures climbing rapidly into the double digits this week, the deep winter snowpack in central Ontario is melting fast. Conservation groups are warning residents to stay clear of swollen waterways and riverbanks, which are highly unstable.
What is a Freshet?
A freshet is the spring thaw resulting from melting snow and ice in rivers. In Canada, this is a yearly natural event, but high rainfall during this transition period can quickly turn a normal freshet into a destructive flood event.
